Real Madrid might look to appoint 49-year-old Champions League-winning manager Thomas Tuchel as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
According to a report by Sport Bild, Thomas Tuchel is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The 49-year-old is a free agent after Chelsea sacked him earlier this season. And Los Blancos might appoint the UEFA Champions League-winning manager as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
Thomas Tuchel has been one of the most highly-rated managers in the last decade and a half. The German tactician cut his teeth in Augsburg’s reserve team before making his mark at FSV Mainz. And after spending five years with Mainz, he joined Borussia Dortmund, where he had a short two-year stint.
Tuchel’s next job came at Paris Saint-Germain, where he won a few honours and set the record for the best win percentage. But his spell ended midway through the 2020/21 season. The 49-year-old then saw his stock skyrocket after joining Chelsea in January 2021. And shortly after, he guided the Blues to the UEFA Champions League title.
But the high of winning the UCL was followed by 15 difficult months as Roman Abramovic reluctantly sold Chelsea before Todd Boehly sacked him barely a month into the ongoing season. The Champions League-winning manager has since been a free agent. But he might soon return to the touchline, with Real Madrid interested in him.
The 49-year-old is also showing interest in other clubs, particularly Tottenham Hotspur. But the lure of managing Real Madrid might be too hard to turn down for the German tactician. Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s interest in the manager comes amid a blow-hot-blow-cold 2022/23 campaign thus far.
The reigning La Liga champions risk ending the season without a trophy. And that might cost Carlo Ancelotti his job. In addition, Ancelotti might take up an international job, with the Brazilian FA keen on appointing him as the next head coach. Tuchel has thus emerged as a viable target for Real Madrid.
But the 49-year-old UCL-winning manager is not the only option on Real Madrid’s radar. They are also interested in Mauricio Pochettino, Raul Gonzalez, and Xabi Alonso. And it will be interesting to see if Tuchel becomes the top target to replace Ancelotti.
