Newcastle United are reportedly looking to appoint Jose Mourinho as their manager, which could come as a shock for Eddie Howe.

According to Marca, Newcastle United are pursuing Jose Mourinho to become their new manager. The Portuguese boss remains in charge of AS Roma and is expected to stay there until 2024. However, the Magpies look to tempt him over a return to the Premier League.

Newcastle United have secured their place in the Premier League after a superb second half of the season. The Magpies were written off after failing to win their first 14 games this season. No team before them had avoided relegation after such a poor start.

Newcastle have gone through their share of drama since the ownership changed hands as their new Saudi Arabia-backed consortium took charge of the club. The keen focus was on the managerial appointment after Steve Bruce was dismissed.

And after a brief period where Unai Emery looked like the favourite, Eddie Howe took over the job and has since steered the club out of their misery and into a comfortable place in mid-table. Howe signed a deal until 2024, so his place is presumably safe for the time being.

However, according to Marca, Newcastle United may be targeting a new manager to take charge from the start of next season. Jose Mourinho is the primary contender, according to the Spanish outlet. The Portuguese had reportedly been approached before Howe. At that time, the tactician had seemingly rejected Newcastle’s advances as he remained focused on his job at Roma.

It may seem like Newcastle United have not given up on the idea of appointing the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham manager. They are reportedly looking for someone with a history of winning titles and challenging the elite to lead the team.

Mourinho certainly fits the bill, although his last two stints in the Premier League haven’t gone to plan. Newcastle United may be ready to back the Portuguese with necessary transfers as they are targeting some of the finest names in the football world.

However, Mourinho may look to continue at Roma, as he likes the club’s long-term project. He has not had the best of first seasons with the Italian giants, although he is starting to build a competitive team.

The news about the possible pursuit of Mourinho may come as a shock for Howe, who has done an admirable job since taking over from Bruce. He has not only helped the club steer clear of the relegation battle but showed signs he can make this team competitive.

It remains to be seen whether the pursuit of Mourinho is serious enough to ensure the Portuguese tactician makes a dramatic return to the Premier League. However, from where things stand, Newcastle are in safe hands under Howe, who will be looking to challenge the top six next season.
