Transfer News: Inter Miami interested in Real Madrid captain Marcelo

Real Madrid captain Marcelo has emerged as a transfer target for MLS outfit Inter Miami, who have already tabled a contract offer for the Brazilian.

According to Spanish publication Defensa Central, Major League Soccer outfit Inter Miami are keen on signing Real Madrid defender Marcelo, who will become a free agent in the summer.

Marcelo is currently the longest-serving player in the Real Madrid squad. The 33-year-old joined Los Blancos from boyhood club Fluminense in January 2007 and quickly became a regular in the starting XI. The Brazilian has enjoyed a glittering career with the Spanish capital outfit, making over 500 appearances in which he has 38 goals and a whopping 101 assists.

Marcelo has won five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies with Real Madrid, along with various other cups. However, the veteran full-back’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu is fast approaching an end.

Marcelo has seen his game-time decrease over the past couple of seasons as his performance levels have been on the decline. And, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Real Madrid are unlikely to offer an extension. It means that the 33-year-old will be a free agent in the summer.

A return to Brazil has been mooted in the recent past. But, Marcelo could end up moving to the United States of America, as MLS franchise Inter Miami are desperate to sign him. As per the report, club owner David Beckham is intent on bringing his former Real Madrid teammate to the club and has presented him with a contract offer to lure him to the MLS.

Inter Miami have already signed one former Real Madrid player in Gonzalo Higuain and have shown an interest in midfield maestro Luka Modric as well. But, Marcelo comes off as a much more realistic transfer target for the MLS outfit than the Croatian midfielder.

The report claims that the defender does not wish to remain in Europe once his contract with Real Madrid runs out. A move to the MLS is something that he is willing to consider, along with a potential return to his homeland, Brazil. So, it remains to be seen if Beckham can convince Marcelo to accept the contract offer from Inter Miami in the coming weeks.
