Premier League giants Liverpool have set their sights on a summer move for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar.

A recent report from TuttoMercatoWeb has shed some light on Liverpool’s plans for the summer, just a day after the conclusion of the winter transfer window. It appears the Premier League giants are open to further reinforcements in the defensive unit, with Milan Skriniar emerging as a potential target.

Skriniar has been linked with a move to England in the past, with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester United mooted as potential destinations. However, it seems Liverpool are prepared to make a move for Inter Milan’s defensive leader, whose current contract expires at the end of next season.

There hasn’t been much indication of a potential contract extension for the 26-year-old, who joined Inter in 2017. During his ongoing four and a half year spell at the San Siro, the defender has racked up almost 200 competitive appearances for the club, helping the Nerazzurri lift the Scudetto last season.

Skriniar’s defensive qualities, coupled with his leadership and experience at the highest level of football, have made him an attractive target for Liverpool.

It appears coach Jurgen Klopp is preparing for a rebuild in the defence next season. The Reds notably had to fend off Aston Villa in their bid to keep hold of Joe Gomez in January, but it won’t be surprising to see the Englishman depart Anfield in the summer in search of regular game-time elsewhere.

The Merseyside giants also offloaded Nathaniel Phillips in January, with the 24-year-old joining AFC Bournemouth on loan. The centre-back may end up staying at the Vitality Stadium beyond this season, provided he can help Scott Parker’s men win promotion back to the top-flight come May.

Hence, Liverpool are in the market for defensive reinforcements as they look to offer fresh competition for the ageing defensive duo of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip.

Skriniar, to that end, might be an excellent option given his experience and the ability to perform under pressure. The Slovakian international is defensively versatile as well and can play in a back three. It gives Klopp tactical variety, even though the German tactician is more than likely to persist with his tried and tested back four for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, along with Skriniar, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for another top player next summer in the form of Paulo Dybala. The Argentine’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning a potential free transfer to Anfield could be on the horizon.
