Transfer News: Chelsea submit enquiry for Alex Sandro

Chelsea reportedly want to address their problems at left-back and have submitted an enquiry for Juventus defender Alex Sandro.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Chelsea have turned their attention towards Juventus defender Alex Sandro, as they hope to solve their issues at left-back before the transfer window shuts. The Blues do not want to sign anyone for the long-term, with only a temporary cover needed until the end of the season.

Chelsea have endured a difficult month and a half with COVID-19 infections and injuries. These have led to disappointing results on the pitch, throwing them out of the Premier League title race, although they remain in contention to win the Carabao Cup and retain their Champions League crown.

Thomas Tuchel’s initial plan for the January transfer window was to sign a new midfielder and a striker. However, the injuries to key players Ben Chilwell and Reece James have changed his outlook, and he is now targeting players that can temporarily replace his revered full-backs.

While the right side is still somewhat covered sufficiently, the left-hand side needs reinforcing. Chelsea tried their best to recall Emerson Palmieri from Lyon, only for the French club to reject all their overtures. The Italian international was their primary option as the club looked away from permanent deals for available players in the market.

Lucas Digne was one of their targets earlier before the Frenchman joined Aston Villa from Everton. And now Chelsea are desperate to bring in a player before the window shuts.

With Emerson not an option to be recalled, they are on the lookout for opportunities that can be temporary. Chelsea are not willing to sign anyone for the long-term and are merely looking for a competitor for Marcos Alonso.

Juventus’s Alex Sandro has emerged as a viable candidate for Chelsea, who have already made their enquiries. The Serie A giants are yet to respond to queries about the 31-year-old’s availability, who is considered key for their season’s progress. The Brazilian has played in 27 games across all competitions, though his performances have been rather underwhelming.

Chelsea could look to propose a temporary move until the end of the season, something Juventus might likely reject. The Italian club could be open to a permanent transfer, which the Blues do npt want at the moment. At 31, Sandro does not represent a long-term option, meaning the Premier League heavyweights could look at other alternatives in the coming days.
