Transfer News: Sheffield United interested in Rhys Williams, Nathaniel Phillips

Liverpool defenders Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams have reportedly emerged on Sheffield United’s radar over a late move this month.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams have become key targets for Sheffield United heading into the final week of the January transfer window. The Liverpool defensive duo could depart Anfield before the turn of the month, with the Championship a likely destination.

Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams burst into the limelight last season when an injury crisis in the defensive department forced Jurgen Klopp to utilise them regularly in the second half of the campaign. Phillips, in particular, was impressive, producing several noteworthy performances to help the Reds clinch a top-four finish.

But the 2021/22 season has been one to forget for the 24-year-old, who has managed only 224 minutes of game-time across four outings. On the other hand, Williams spent the first half of the season on loan at Swansea City but made just five Championship appearances before being recalled by Liverpool.

While initial reports suggested that Williams could stay put at Anfield if Phillips leaves Liverpool, it seems as if he could join another club for the second half of the campaign. And one common suitor for Phillips and Williams comes from the Championship, with Sheffield United keen on signing them.

The Blades have already conducted business with Liverpool once recently, signing Ben Davies on loan from Liverpool last summer. The 26-year-old has been fairly regular for Sheffield United this season, making 14 appearances in the Championship thus far.

But with Chris Basham facing an uncertain future at Bramall Lane, Sheffield United could do with a new central defensive addition and could turn to Liverpool once again. Phillips has been linked with several Premier League clubs, including Watford, so it is unclear if he will join a Championship club.

On the other hand, Rhys Williams has already had one failed loan stint in the Championship, although the opportunity to play regularly at Bramall Lane could be attractive. And as we approach the end of the January transfer window, it might not be surprising to see either Liverpool defender joining Sheffield United.
