Transfer News: Real Madrid interested in Seko Fofana

Real Madrid are reportedly keeping a keen eye on the progress of 26-year-old RC Lens midfielder Seko Fofana.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Seko Fofana has popped up on the radar of Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old is also a highly coveted midfielder in the transfer market this month.

Seko Fofana spent his formative years in France and England, most notably playing for the age-division teams at Manchester City. But it was in Italy that he first made his name, as he progressed leaps and bounds upon joining Udinese from Manchester City in July 2016. Four years later, he returned to France by arriving at Ligue 1 club RC Lens, and he has not looked back since.

The 26-year-old has been in tremendous form in the ongoing campaign, scoring eight goals in 23 appearances across all competitions for Les Sang et Or. Those eight goals make him the top scorer for the Ligue 1 club this term, and his exploits have been noticed by one of the biggest clubs in Europe – Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants are laying down a succession plan for ageing stalwarts Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, with Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga added to the first-team setup in recent years to that end. But with a shroud of uncertainty surrounding the futures of Dani Ceballos and Isco, Real Madrid will need to make immediate reinforcements in midfield.

To that end, several midfielders have recently been linked with Los Blancos, with Fabian Ruiz one of the players to have emerged on their radar. But with Real Madrid keeping a close watch on talents in Ligue 1, Seko Fofana has popped up on their shortlist of targets for the summer transfer window.

In addition to the 26-year-old, Lucas Paqueta is also a target for Real Madrid, with the Brazilian going from strength to strength at Lyon. But in Fofana, Real Madrid could land a midfielder who has an eye for a goal. However, several clubs are also attempting to sign the Ivory Coast international this month, with Leeds United and Newcastle United hot on his trail.

With Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr. doing the bulk of the goalscoring for Real Madrid this season, signing a midfielder who can chip in with 5-10 goals per season will be a step in the right direction. For now, though, the Merengues are simply closely monitoring him, and it remains to be seen if they will firm up their interest in him.
