Transfer News: Atletico Madrid battle Bayern Munich for Andreas Christensen

Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich are reportedly embroiled in a transfer battle to sign Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich are vying for the signature of Andreas Christensen. The Chelsea defender is also a target for AC Milan over a possible Bosman move in the summer transfer window.

Andreas Christensen has made gradual progress in his career since returning to Chelsea from a two-year loan stint with Borussia Monchengladbach. And since Thomas Tuchel took charge of the Chelsea first team, the 25-year-old has gone from strength to strength at Stamford Bridge.

The Danish international has scored his first goal for the Blues this season, making 21 appearances across all competitions thus far. But Christensen’s situation has put Chelsea in a spot of bother, as he is in the final year of his contract with the club. This has captured the attention of Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.

The reigning La Liga champions might enter the transfer market for a centre-back in the summer, as Felipe is on the wrong side of 30 and has failed to make his mark on Diego Simeone. And Christensen could be a viable option for Atletico Madrid, with his impending status as a free agent further making him an appealing target.

On the other hand, Bayern Munich’s interest in the Chelsea defender could be stemming from the uncertainties surrounding Niklas Sule’s future. The German international could leave the Bundesliga club on a free transfer in the summer, creating a space for a centre-back, one that Christensen could fill.

Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich are not the only two clubs pursuing Christensen, who has also been linked with Barcelona. In addition, the Chelsea defender is also a target for AC Milan. The Rossoneri will likely be forced into the market for a centre-back amid the uncertain situation of Alessio Romagnoli.

The three European giants are only likely to launch the offensive for Christensen in the summer transfer window, with their resolve likely to grow stronger if he leaves Chelsea as a free agent. But Chelsea will be keen on tying the 25-year-old down to a new contract, especially with Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta also in the final years of their respective deals.
