Transfer News: Chelsea keen on signing Sergio Gomez

Chelsea are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing Spanish under-21 international Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht this month.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Sergio Gomez is the subject of interest from Chelsea over a possible move in the January transfer window. However, the Blues understand that signing the Spanish under-21 international from Anderlecht will be difficult this month.

Sergio Gomez spent his formative years with Espanyol and Barcelona before making his first-team breakthrough in Germany after joining Borussia Dortmund in 2018. The stint with the Bundesliga heavyweights was hardly successful, as he spent two years on loan at SD Huesca. Upon returning to the Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund immediately sold the 21-year-old to Anderlecht.

This season, the Spanish under-21 international has been in sensational form, garnering a fantastic tally of six goals and 13 assists in 28 appearances across all competitions for Anderlecht. Gomez’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Chelsea, setting their sights on him.

The Blues are keen on signing a new left wing-back this month after Ben Chilwell sustained a knee injury that has ended his season prematurely. They have since failed to bring Emerson Palmieri back from his loan spell at Lyon, although Kenedy is back at Stamford Bridge. But Chelsea will still prefer signing someone who can compete with Marcos Alonso rather than a player to just make up the numbers.

To that end, Lucas Digne was heavily linked with Chelsea, although they faced stiff competition from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United before he joined Aston Villa. The west Londoners now need to look elsewhere in search of a left wing-back.

One of the alternatives for Lucas Digne has been touted to be Ryan Bertrand, with Sergio Gomez now emerging on Chelsea’s radar. The Spanish under-21 international’s excellent output was bound to attract several European bigwigs, and Chelsea could do with someone like him to compete with Ben Chilwell for years to come.

But a January move is unlikely to materialise, with Anderlecht expected to retain the 21-year-old. Chelsea will continue to track Gomez’s progress, although Marcos Alonso’s performance against Manchester City this week should prompt them to enter the market for a left wing-back this month.
