Transfer News: Inter Milan rival Manchester City for Luka Modric

Inter Milan and Manchester City are reportedly embroiled in a transfer tussle to sign Luka Modric from Real Madrid in the summer.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Premier League champions Manchester City and Serie A title holders Inter Milan are ready to offer Luka Modric a two-year contract if he leaves Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

Luka Modric will go down in history as one of the best midfielders of his generation, having been a stalwart for two European bigwigs. The Croat first onto the limelight during his four-year stint with Tottenham Hotspur, and he has stepped his game up several notches since joining Real Madrid in August 2012.

Spanish media had initially branded the 36-year-old as a failed transfer, but he has proven to be one of the most dependable midfielders in Europe during his spell with Real Madrid. To date, Modric has made 412 appearances for Los Blancos, chipping in with 28 goals and 66 assists in the process.

But the veteran playmaker’s future at Real Madrid is shrouded in uncertainty, as he is in the final year of his contract with the club and in disagreement over the terms of a renewal. This situation has captured the attention of Manchester City and Inter Milan.

The interest from Manchester City is somewhat surprising, considering Modric’s advancing age. But the Real Madrid stalwart could be a short-term solution in midfield for the Citizens, especially with Fernandinho approaching the end of his glittering career. The Premier League champions are thus ready to hand Modric a two-year contract.

But Manchester City will need to fend off competition from Inter Milan, who hold a long-standing interest in Modric. The 36-year-old could be a short-term replacement for Stefano Sensi, who has recently been linked with Modric’s former club Tottenham. And like Manchester City, the Serie A champions are prepared to offer a two-year deal to the Real Madrid playmaker.

Modric’s preference would still be staying at Real Madrid despite the minor standoff over the terms of a new contract. Recent reports have claimed that the veteran midfielder could sign a new deal with Real Madrid soon, meaning Manchester City and Inter Milan will have to set their sights elsewhere for a midfield reinforcement.
