Newcastle United have reportedly expressed interest in Borussia Dortmund’s in-form midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud.

According to reliable Sport1 journalist Patrick Berger, Mahmoud Dahoud has emerged as the latest player to be linked with a move to Newcastle United. The Premier League outfit is exploring the possibility of a potential January swoop as new coach Eddie Howe looks to shore up his options in the middle of the park.

Formerly of Borussia Monchengladbach, Dahoud has been one of the top-performing midfielders for Dortmund over the past 12 months. A prominent feature in the club’s exceptional DFB Pokal winning campaign last season, the 26-year-old has established himself as a first-team regular, moving ahead of Axel Witsel and even Emre Can in the pecking order.

Under Marco Rose, Dahoud’s presence in the number six slot has been invaluable in helping Dortmund keep up with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race this term. He notably starred in the recent win over Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring the late winner to help his team secure a 4-3 comeback victory.

The 26-year-old’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Newcastle United reportedly interested in his services. The Magpies are in the market for midfield reinforcements as the club looks to exercise its recently acquired financial muscle.

Newcastle United have recently brought in Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. The English right-back became the club’s first-ever signing under the Saudi Arabia-backed regime. And it appears Eddie Howe is now looking to further fuel his team’s creative output by signing someone like Dahoud.

The German international could be an excellent upgrade over Sean Longstaff, providing security in possession and allowing Jonjo Shelvey to express himself further up the pitch. With almost 150 appearances in the Bundesliga, Dahoud also brings considerable experience at the highest level of football, making him a viable target for the Toon.

However, Berger states that Dahoud is uninterested in a January move to Newcastle United. He remains quite happy at Dortmund, having established himself as one of the star players in the team. The German international may become even more important to Rose’s side amid speculation linking Axel Witsel to a move to Barcelona, among many other top clubs across Europe.

The Magpies, though, may have better luck targeting the 26-year-old’s Dortmund teammate in Dan-Axel Zagadou. The Frenchman’s contract is expiring in the summer, and he has been linked with a move to Premier League amid interest from Manchester United, West Ham United and Newcastle.
