Everton and Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing 24-year-old Brazilian international David Neres from Ajax.
According to a report by French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Everton and Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in David Neres. The 24-year-old Ajax attacker faces an uncertain future at the Dutch club, with Lyon also keen on signing him.
David Neres joined Ajax from Sao Paulo in January 2017 as a 19-year-old prodigious talent and made his first-team debut for the club a month later. The Brazilian forward was top-notch in his first two full seasons in Europe and even broke into his national side due to his displays for the Dutch giants.
But Neres’s stock has been on the wane in the last couple of years, and he has lost his spot as a first-choice winger for Ajax since the arrival of Antony. To date, the 24-year-old has featured 180 times for Ajax, garnering a decent tally of 47 goals and 41 assists in the process. However, Neres could leave the club this month to secure regular game-time, with Everton and Newcastle United eager to sign him.
The interest from Everton could be stemming from Andros Townsend’s inconsistencies following a strong start to the season. With Demarai Gray being the only consistent performer for the Toffees apart from Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Everton could do with a player like Neres, especially with the star strikers linked with possible departures from Goodison Park.
Several wide-attackers, including Dejan Kulusevski, have thus been linked with Everton, with Neres an attractive target. However, Everton will have to fend off competition from Newcastle United to secure the services of the 24-year-old Brazilian international.
The Magpies are undergoing a squad overhaul in the wake of their takeover last year, with Kieran Trippier recently becoming the maiden star signing under the new regime. The attacking unit is also a key area to bolster this month, with Paris Saint-Germain prodigy Xavi Simons among the players on their radar. And Neres could be a viable option to reinforce the wide-attacking slots.
In addition to Everton and Newcastle United, the 24-year-old is also a target for Lyon, with the Ligue 1 giants looking to sign him on loan this month due to Xherdan Shaqiri’s struggles. The two Premier League clubs will thus need to pull their socks up to land the Brazilian international in the ongoing transfer window.
