Transfer News: West Ham United join race to sign Lucas Digne

Everton’s out of favour left-back Lucas Digne has reportedly emerged as a potential January target for West Ham United.

A recent report from the Daily Mail has offered an update on West Ham United’s transfer policy in the January transfer window. David Moyes is seemingly desperate to shore up his options in almost every department, including the defensive unit that requires immediate reinforcements in the absence of Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna.

While the Hammers have been linked with a move for Niklas Sule, among many other central defenders, it appears they are also in the market for Lucas Digne. The report suggests West Ham have become the latest club to register interest in the 28-year-old Everton left-back, who is set to leave Goodison Park in January.

The Frenchman has recently fallen out with manager Rafael Benitez. The Everton boss has already ostracised the French international from the first-team, even signing Vitaliy Mykolenko as a direct replacement. It has led to speculation over the Digne’s long-term future at the club.

With 127 competitive appearances for Everton and 43 caps for France, Digne has emerged as a January target for multiple Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa and Chelsea. The former Barcelona man is also courted by Newcastle United and Juventus, among many other top clubs across Europe.

West Ham are no exception, it seems, as the east Londoners look to beef up their options in the left-back department this month. While there has been much discussion regarding the injury woes of the central defenders, the club has also struggled in Aaron Cresswell’s absence.

With Cresswell unavailable, West Ham’s chances of competing for the top four spots in the Premier League have taken a hit, with his deputy Arthur Masuaku not providing a similar drive going forward.

The shortcomings in the left-back department have notably forced Moyes to look into the possibility of signing Antonee Robinson. But in Lucas Digne, the former Manchester United head coach could find himself a top-class talent who offers experience and skill. The 28-year-old can thus enhance the overall quality of the West Ham backline.

However, it remains unlikely that West Ham will be able to convince the Everton star to arrive at the London Stadium in January, especially with the French international eager to play for Chelsea.

The Hammers, though, may have a bit more luck in their reported pursuit of Jesse Lingard, who has once again emerged as a target after a disappointing start to the season with Manchester United.
