Matthias Ginter is reportedly in advanced talks to join Bayern Munich and prefers arriving at the Allianz Arena instead of Barcelona.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Matthias Ginter is leaning towards joining Bayern Munich instead of Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The Borussia Monchengladbach defender is already in advanced talks with Die Roten over completing a free transfer.

Matthias Ginter joined Borussia Monchengladbach from rivals Borussia Dortmund in July 2017 and has since established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. At the same time, the 27-year-old has also been a regular fixture for the German national side.

To date, Ginter has made 165 appearances for Gladbach, chipping in with ten goals and five assists in the process. However, the German defender’s time at Borussia-Park will draw to a close in the summer transfer window when his contract runs out. This has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The interest from Barcelona is understandable, considering Eric Garcia has failed to stamp his authority since arriving on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer. In addition, with Gerard Pique in the twilight of his career and Samuel Umtiti deemed surplus to requirements, the need to sign a centre-back has been accentuated.

To that end, Ginter is a viable target for Barcelona, who face stiff competition from Bayern Munich in the race to sign the Borussia Monchengladbach defender. And Bayern’s eagerness to secure the services of the 27-year-old makes a world of sense.

While the Bundesliga champions signed a centre-back last summer in Dayot Upamecano, Niklas Sule’s uncertain situation leaves them searching for a replacement. Interestingly, Sule has been linked with Barcelona, among other clubs. As for Sule’s successor, his compatriot Ginter is a viable option to pursue.

According to El Nacional, Ginter prefers joining Bayern Munich instead of Barcelona when he leaves Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer. The German international is already in advanced talks with Bayern over sealing a Bosman move.

So, with the cards stacked against them, it remains to be seen if Barcelona can claw their way back in the race to sign Ginter. However, the 27-year-old does not seem to have faith in Xavi’s project at Camp Nou, meaning Bayern Munich will likely secure his services.
