Transfer News: Chelsea considering Kieran Trippier swoop

Chelsea are in contention to make a January move for Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier, following Reece James’ injury.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea are mulling over a move for Kieran Trippier. The Atletico Madrid star is keen on returning to the Premier League after a difficult start to the 2021/22 campaign, with multiple clubs across England interested in his services.

Chelsea’s desire to sign Trippier stems from the recent injury of Reece James that has compounded Thomas Tuchel’s problems. The English international has been ruled out for a few months, leaving Tuchel with Cesar Azpilicueta as the only reliable option in the right wing-back position.

It is also fair to point out that Azpilicueta’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the season. The veteran defender has already been linked with a move to Barcelona next summer, so Tuchel may require a new right-back irrespective of James’ fitness.

The Blues have been in the market for Barcelona’s Sergino Dest lately. But it appears the west Londoners favour a move for Trippier, who is quite familiar with English football and offers more experience at the highest level.

During his time at Atleti, the Englishman has featured in 85 competitive matches, notably winning the Spanish league title last term. The defender also has over 100 Premier League appearances to his name while winning 35 caps for the English national team – making him one of the most accomplished right-backs in Europe.

Trippier could thus be an excellent competitor for James at Chelsea. The 31-year-old shouldn’t take much time settling back into the Premier League, and his attacking prowess should offer Tuchel some much-needed variety in the right wing-back slot.

However, Trippier won’t be an easy target for the Blues, with Atletico Madrid prepared to put a hefty price tag on his head. Besides, the experienced defender is reportedly closing in on a move to Newcastle United, who have no problems meeting Los Rojiblancos’ demands thanks to the deep pockets of their new owners.

In the meantime, Chelsea are keen on signing a left-back as well, after Ben Chilwell’s knee surgery ruled him out for the rest of the season. The Blues may have more luck in this department, with top target Lucas Digne reportedly keen on moving to Stamford Bridge in January.
