Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma are in contention to sign TSG Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch next summer.

According to Sky Germany, Florian Grillitsch is expected to leave TSG Hoffenheim when his contract expires at the end of the season. It has made him a hot prospect in the market, with Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma among the clubs interested in his services.

Regarded as one of Austria’s finest midfield talents, Grillitsch has had a topsy-turvy career in the Bundesliga ever since his breakthrough at Werder Bremen during the 2015/16 campaign. He initially started his career as a dynamic, attacking-minded midfielder, but in recent years, he has transformed into a fully-fledged number six.

Especially under the leadership of current Hoffenheim coach Sebastian Hoeness, Grillitsch has taken his new role with aplomb. He has been an ever-present figure in Hoffenheim’s midfield unit, forming a solid combination alongside Diadie Samassekou and Dennis Gieger. Their collective contributions in the middle of the park have helped Die Kraichgauer push for the top four places in the Bundesliga this season.

However, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, the Austrian international has become a potential target for some of the top clubs across Europe, including Tottenham Hotspur.

Having been linked with a move for players like Nahitan Nandez, the Lilywhites are evidently in the market for new midfielders that can compete with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp.

Not to mention, Spurs are poised to offload Tanguy Ndombele in the January transfer window, while Harry Winks is also facing an uncertain future amid issues with a lack of game-time under Antonio Conte. It has forced the Italian to look for new faces in the market, and it appears like Grillitsch has popped up on the radar.

With 172 Bundesliga appearances and over 30 caps for the Austrian national team, the 26-year-old offers considerable experience at the highest level of football. Most importantly, his ability to spread the ball around the park, coupled with his tackling and defensive prowess, could help assume the role of Marcelo Brozovic in Conte’s system next season.

Given his status as a potential free agent, Grillitsch could indeed be a smart investment for Tottenham Hotspur, although the Lilywhites may have to fend off competition from former manager Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma outfit in the pursuit of the Hoffenheim midfielder next summer.
