Transfer News: Dani Olmo open to joining Real Madrid

Dani Olmo is reportedly considering the possibility of joining Real Madrid instead of Barcelona when he leaves RB Leipzig.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Dani Olmo has taken a major call on his future as he approaches the end of his stint with RB Leipzig. The Spanish international is ready to join Real Madrid instead of Barcelona, with sporting projects proving the differentiating factor.

Dani Olmo progressed through the ranks at Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia before calling it quits at the club aged 16. What was even more surprising was the decision to join Dinamo Zagreb, where he grew leaps and bounds to emerge on the radars of some of the biggest clubs in Europe. The 23-year-old eventually joined RB Leipzig in January 2020.

To date, the Spanish international has made 67 appearances for Leipzig, chipping in with 12 goals and 13 assists along the way. However, Olmo’s time with the Bundesliga giants appears to be winding down, with the who’s who of European football keen on signing him. And two of his prospective suitors are Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The Catalan giants unsuccessfully attempted to land Olmo late in the summer transfer window, but there was no time to see the deal through. The interest has not waned since, and it has been speculation that Olmo’s representatives were set to open talks with Barcelona over a possible winter move.

However, Barcelona’s ouster from the UEFA Champions League has turned Olmo’s head, with the 23-year-old having second thought about returning to Camp Nou despite initially harbouring dreams of doing so. Such a development has come as a major boost to Real Madrid, with the player approaching the Spanish heavyweights.

It has recently been suggested that the Merengues hold an interest in signing Olmo in January, and the stars could be aligning perfectly for them. Real Madrid’s interest in the Spaniard makes sense, considering Isco and Dani Ceballos have bene deemed surplus to requirements, while Luka Modric is in the twilight of his career.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United have also been linked with Olmo, but he is attracted by the idea of joining Real Madrid instead. With the prospect of earning a high salary at Real Madrid also looming large, it looks like Olmo’s next destination is sealed.
