Transfer News: Newcastle United told to pay €40 million for Marco Asensio

Real Madrid have slapped a €40 million price tag on 25-year-old Spanish forward Marco Asensio, a target for Newcastle United.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Newcastle United will need to shell out €40 million to secure the services of Marco Asensio. The Magpies are prepared to offer €20 million to sign the 25-year-old Real Madrid but will have to pay double that amount to sign their key target.

Asensio has endured a difficult time at Real Madrid since returning from a long-term knee injury last year. Once touted to be a long-term solution in attack for Los Blancos, the Spaniard has blown hot and cold at an alarming rate. As a result, he has lost his spot as a regular and has had to share game-time with Rodrygo Goes, Lucas Vazquez and Eden Hazard.

The 2021/22 season has been one to forget so far for the 25-year-old apart from a hat-trick against former side RCD Mallorca. His record thus far this term reads a concerning four goals and one assist in 16 appearances across all competitions. As a result, it is not surprising that there have been rumours about a possible departure from the Santiago Bernabeu, with Newcastle United being one of his prospective suitors.

The interest from Newcastle is understandable, considering they are set for a major squad overhaul at the earliest opportunity. While Asensio has been inconsistent for Real Madrid in the past year, the 25-year-old still can make a difference on his own.

So, if he can rediscover his best form, Asensio could become a solid asset for Newcastle United and an upgrade over just about every wide-attacker in their squad. And as per El Nacional, the Magpies are prepared to offer €20 million to sign Asensio from Real Madrid.

However, the Spanish giants are set to demand €40 million to part with the 25-year-old in the January transfer window. In addition, Newcastle will also need to convince Asensio over their project, which will be a big ask, considering he will be leaving the current La Liga table-toppers in Real Madrid to join a team at the bottom of the standings in the Premier League.

What remains to be seen is if Newcastle United agree to shell out €40 million to secure the services of the Spanish international. In addition, it will also be interesting to see if Asensio can be convinced to leave Real Madrid to make his way to St. James’ Park amid interest from several other clubs, including Arsenal.
