Manchester United and Everton are interested in securing the signing of RSC Anderlecht’s Spanish left-back Sergio Gomez after scouting him recently.

According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United and Everton have entered the race for the capture of former Barcelona starlet Sergio Gomez from Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht.

Gomez joined Barcelona’s La Masia youth setup and spent eight years on the club’s books before leaving for Borussia Dortmund in January 2018. He made his first-team debut for the Black and Yellows three months later but managed just three senior appearances for the German giants before being loaned out to Huesca in 2019, where he spent two solid seasons.

Following his stint back in Spain, Gomez was signed permanently by Anderlecht this past summer, and he has thrived under the tutelage of Vincent Kompany. In 22 appearances for the Belgians, the 21-year-old left-back has plundered five goals and eight assists across all competitions, emerging as a shining light for his team.

Gomez’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with Premier League clubs Manchester United and Everton taking an interest in the ex-Barcelona prospect. The report claims that scouts from both the English clubs were in the audience when the 21-year-old scored a brace against Charleroi this past weekend and are ready to launch a move.

Manchester United’s left-back situation looks sorted for the present and the future. Luke Shaw has grown considerably over the past eighteen months, although he is currently recovering from a head injury. Alex Telles, meanwhile, has been more than an able backup at Old Trafford, while the Red Devils will also have the promising Brandon Williams back after his loan spell with Norwich City.

In addition to that, there is also the 18-year-old Alvaro Fernandez, who is making quite an impression with the reserve team. So, making a move for Gomez, unless Manchester United are planning to offload someone like Telles or Williams, would not make a lot of sense.

As for Everton, they could certainly make do with the addition of a player like the 21-year-old. The Toffees have no cover at left-back beyond first-choice defender Lucas Digne and Gomez, given his age and potential, can come in and challenge the Frenchman while providing a backup option at the manager’s disposal.

Gomez is contracted with Anderlecht until 2025, and the Belgian giants would certainly be reluctant to lose their key man in January. Whether Manchester United or Everton make a swoop for the ex-Barcelona starlet in January or the summer of 2022 remains to be seen.
