Manchester United are reportedly willing to lodge an offer worth €70 million to sign Kalvin Phillips, a target for Manchester City and Tottenham.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to sign Kalvin Phillips in next summer’s transfer window. Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are also courting the Leeds United midfielder.
Kalvin Phillips has been with Leeds United since joining their youth setup from local club Wortley in 2010. After making swift progress through the ranks in West Yorkshire, the Englishman earned his first-team debut in 2015. And he has not looked back since, becoming a key figure for club and country in recent years.
To date, the 25-year-old has made 224 appearances for Leeds, chipping in with 14 goals and 13 assists in the process. The player’s exploits for the Whites and England have made him one of the most coveted players in his country. And as things stand, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing him.
Recent reports have claimed that the Red Devils are prioritising a move for Kalvin Phillips, who is a viable target. After all, the Manchester United first-team squad does not have a long-term option for the holding midfield spot, with Nemanja Matic in the twilight of his career. With neither Fred nor Scott McTominay being a defensive midfielder, Manchester United must sign one, bringing Phillips into the picture.
As for Manchester City, with Fernandinho in the final phase of his career, a long-term succession plan has to be laid out. While Rodri is a fantastic player, Pep Guardiola’s penchant for aggressive rotation means signing a second defensive midfielder is imperative for the Premier League champions, making Phillips an option worth considering.
Meanwhile, Tottenham require a creative midfielder more than someone who can hold the fort, considering they already have two excellent options for such a position in Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. However, with Harry Winks facing an uncertain future at the club amid interest from Newcastle United, Spurs will need a replacement, which might explain why they want Phillips.
However, Manchester United are prepared to launch the offensive for Phillips, with a €70 million bid in the works. The Red Devils intend to bring the 25-year-old to Old Trafford next summer, and a €70 million offer could do the trick. However, Phillips is hesitant in accepting a move to Manchester United, considering the animosity between Leeds and them.
Such a development could come as a boost for Manchester City, Tottenham, and even Liverpool, with the Reds also being heavily linked with the Leeds midfielder recently. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen if Manchester United can convince the Whites to part with Phillips with an attractive offer.
