Transfer News: Barcelona set to initiate discussions for Dani Olmo

Barcelona are reportedly set to begin discussions over a possible January move for 23-year-old RB Leipzig forward Dani Olmo.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Cadena SER, Barcelona are stepping up their efforts to sign Dani Olmo in the January transfer window. The Catalan giants are set to initiate discussions with the representatives of the 23-year-old RB Leipzig forward in the coming days.

Dani Olmo spent several of his formative years at Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia before taking the brave call of leaving the club aged 16. The decision paid off handsomely, with the young Spaniard progressing considerably at Dinamo Zagreb before earning a move to RB Leipzig in January 2020.

To date, the 23-year-old has turned out 67 times for Leipzig, chipping in with 12 goals and 14 assists in the process. His exploits with the Bundesliga giants have helped Olmo become a regular feature for the Spanish national side. At the same time, several clubs across Europe, including Barcelona, have been showing an interest in the former La Masia ace.

It has been widely reported that Olmo is a priority target for Barcelona following the Blaugrana’s failure to sign him late in the summer transfer window. The interest in the Spanish international makes a world of sense, considering Barcelona’s attacking unit has faltered massively this season.

With Ansu Fati still not regaining peak fitness and Ousmane Dembele’s future up in the air, signing someone like Olmo will be a step in the right direction. It has even been suggested that Olmo would prefer joining Barcelona over other suitors like Real Madrid.

However, there have been suggestions in recent weeks that the finances required to sign could force Barcelona to end their interest in Olmo. The Catalan giants have summoned the 23-year-old’s representatives to open talks over the possibility of a January transfer in the coming days, though.

In addition to Olmo, discussions over a move for Raheem Sterling have also begun, with Barcelona director Mateu Alemany travelling to England to open talks with Manchester City. As for the pursuit of Olmo, it remains to be seen if Barcelona can secure the services of the 23-year-old former academy star in January.
