Chelsea and Manchester United could reportedly go head-to-head for the signing of Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski, who is keen on a Premier League switch.
According to a report from Fichajes, Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski appears keen on a summer move to the Premier League, sparking strong interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
Lewandowski is undoubtedly one of the greatest strikers of the modern era. Having burst into the limelight during his stint with Borussia Dortmund, the Poland international took his game to a whole new level after signing for Bayern Munich in 2014. During his time with Die Roten, the 33-year-old has broken numerous records, won a host of titles and trophies, and cemented his legacy as one of the greatest marksmen in the game.
A record of 317 goals and 67 assists from 346 games makes for mind-boggling reading, and Lewandowski is showing no signs of slowing down despite turning 33. Indeed, the Bayern Munich superstar has already plundered 23 goals in just 17 games in the 2021/22 season. However, his time in Bavaria might be coming to an end in the near future.
Lewandowski’s contract with the German champions expires in 2023, and he is mulling over the possibility of making a switch in the summer. As per the report, the striker has enquired Poland international teammate Matty Cash about the Premier League, expressing his desire of playing in England, which has now led to interest from two of the biggest clubs in the land in Chelsea and Manchester United.
Chelsea spent a club-record sum to bolster their centre-forward department this past summer, signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan. In addition, they also have Timo Werner in their ranks, although with the German international struggling for productivity in front of goal, he could be shown the exit doors.
This would open up the need for a new top-class centre-forward at Stamford Bridge. Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund remains on the agenda for Chelsea, but they would be open to making a swoop for Lewandowski should he become available at the end of the season.
As for Manchester United, they have a plethora of options in the No. 9 role in the form of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford. However, Ronaldo will be turning 37 in February while Cavani is out of contract at the end of the season.
Furthermore, Martial seems to be out of favour at Old Trafford and could be allowed to leave. With Rashford and Greenwood being utilised out wide, there would be room for another addition in the centre-forward department come summer. Lewandowski, given his world-class quality, would undoubtedly be an appealing option for the 20-time English champions.
However, with Ronaldo also at the club, how the Polish hitman fits into the scheme of things would be interesting to see. In addition, for Manchester United to stand a chance of landing the 33-year-old, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League would also be a necessity, something that cannot be guaranteed at the moment, thanks to their huge dip in form.
