Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Serie A giants AC Milan, with his contract expiring in the summer.
According to a report from Fichajes, AC Milan are the latest club to show an interest in securing the services of Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, who is in the final year of his contract with the Blues.
Christensen has been with Chelsea since 2012 when he signed the club’s youth setup from Danish outfit Brondby. He made his first-team debut for the west London giants in October 2014 at the age of 18, under then-manager Jose Mourinho. However, he had to bide his time to get a regular run in the senior side.
Christensen enjoyed a successful two-year loan stint with Borussia Monchengladbach between 2015 and 2017, which put him on the map and allowed him to force his way through into the Chelsea setup. Since then, the 25-year-old has not looked back and has racked up 140 appearances for the Blues, although he has had to share game-time with the other defenders on the roster.
This season, Christensen has featured 13 times in all competitions under Thomas Tuchel, missing just three of the Blues’ 11 Premier League games. With Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta not getting any younger, the German tactician has called upon the Danish international more frequently this term, and he has performed admirably.
However, with the 25-year-old currently in the final year of his contract with Chelsea, speculations over his future at Stamford Bridge are starting to do the rounds of late. Atletico Madrid have been credited with an interest in Christensen recently, while there have also been murmurs of a move to Real Madrid. Now, AC Milan have also joined the list of prospective suitors for the Dane.
The Rossoneri raided Chelsea for a defensive signing earlier this year when they brought in Fikayo Tomori, who has been a huge hit at San Siro. The England international has been a reliable figure at the back for Milan alongside Simon Kjaer. But with Alessio Romagnoli’s contract expiring at the end of the season, the Serie A heavyweights are in the market for defensive reinforcements.
Christensen, to that end, is a viable target for Stefano Pioli’s men. The prospect of him being available on a free transfer will only add to the appeal. However, the Rossoneri are likely to face competition from Borussia Monchengladbach as well for the 25-year-old. At the same time, there is a chance that he signs a new contract with Chelsea, which would kill the chances of a transfer completely.
It now remains to be seen what the future holds for the 25-year-old Danish international, who is growing in stature at Chelsea under Tuchel this season.
