Transfer News: Manchester United reignite interest in Caglar Soyuncu

Manchester United have reportedly reignited their interest in Leicester City’s Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu, whose contract expires in 2023.

According to a Spanish publication, Fichajes, Manchester United have their eyes set on a potential summer move for Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu.

The 25-year-old has been with Leicester for three years now, having arrived from German outfit SC Freiburg and has grown into a key player at the King Power Stadium. Soyuncu enjoyed brilliant campaigns in the last couple of seasons, playing a role in the Foxes securing UEFA Europa League football and winning the FA Cup.

The Turkish international’s performances have taken a hit this season, but he remains a Premier League-proven defender entering the peak years of his career. Soyuncu had been on the radars of Manchester United in the summer earlier this year, but they instead ended up signing primary transfer target Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

However, it seems like the 20-time English champions are not quite done with their interest in the former Freiburg centre-half. As per the report mentioned above, Manchester United are still monitoring Soyuncu and wish to sign him up at the end of the season when he will be entering the final year of his contract.

Following the addition of Varane, the Red Devils have no shortage of options in defence. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are all available at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s disposal, while Axel Tuanzebe will also be an option once he returns from his loan spell at Aston Villa.

However, recent performances have shown that Lindelof and Maguire are susceptible at the back while Jones is not part of the long-term plans. With Bailly struggling for game-time, he could choose to leave the club as well, which would leave Manchester United in need of a new centre-back before next season.

The Premier League bigwigs have been linked to several players like Jules Kounde of Sevilla and Wesley Fofana of Leicester City. Now, the latter’s teammate, Soyuncu, is also back on the agenda for Manchester United.

Leicester City showed that they can extract top dollar for their players when they sold Maguire to Manchester United two years ago for a world-record transfer fee for a defender. However, with Soyuncu’s contract running out in 2023, they may not be in a strong negotiating position unless they tie him down to a new deal.
