Transfer News: Newcastle submit enquiry for Chelsea target Marcelo Brozovic

Newcastle United have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Marcelo Brozovic, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

According to Tuttosport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Marcelo Brozovic. The Inter Milan midfielder is attracting a lot of attention due to his contract situation with Inter Milan. His current deal expires at the end of the season, meaning he could potentially be available on a free transfer.

Brozovic’s agent is demanding a €6.5 million per season contract, but Inter are only willing to offer €5 million. It has put a host of clubs on red alert, with Newcastle being the latest team to register interest in the experienced midfielder.

In fact, the player’s entourage have received an enquiry from the Premier League outfit, who have been taken over by a Saudi backed consortium. The transaction has made NUFC one of the richest clubs in world football and the Magpies are expected to make big moves in the upcoming January transfer window.

They have already been linked with a move for Ousmane Dembele among many other high profile players in Europe. In Brozovic, the Magpies are looking for an experienced operator, who can offer stability in the middle of the park and lead the club forward under this new regime.

The Croatian international certainly has the pedigree to do so, having featured in over 250 competitive matches for Inter Milan during his ongoing six-year spell at the club. He has won the Serie A as well as reached the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup with his nation.

Brozovic’s pedigree at the highest level of football is exactly the reason why Newcastle United aren’t the only club interested in his services. In fact, the Magpies are set to face stiff competition from league rivals Chelsea in the pursuit of the Croatian, who has been identified as a target by Thomas Tuchel, as N’Golo Kante is not getting any younger and is battling injury problems on a regular basis.

However, the report does state that the 28-year-old is highly unlikely to leave Inter Milan. Despite the disagreements over the contract extension, the player remains determined to stay in Milan and continue playing for the Nerazzurri. As such, Newcastle and Chelsea may have to shift their attention towards other alternatives.

It will be particularly interesting to see if it tempts the Blues to step up their reported chase of a certain Aurelien Tchouameni, as Tuchel grow desperate to bolster his ranks in midfield.
