Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Everton and England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and have shortlisted him as a target for the upcoming transfer window.

According to reports in the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle United have joined a host of Premier League clubs monitoring Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they look for top young talents, with loads of promise and potential.

The report adds that Calvert-Lewin is highly rated by Newcastle’s existing recruitment department and is likely to continue as a subject of interest even if technical staff changes occur in the background when PIF begin to restructure the club to set the tone for a new era at Tyneside.

Following their takeover, Newcastle are now the richest club in world football and have been a constant fixture in the rumour mill as they are expected to be major players in the transfer market. However, the club needs a major investment on the pitch and off the pitch creating a more professional environment and facilities. Despite them being linked with Coutinho’s and Icardi’s, there is an understanding that top young talents will be new owners’ key priorities.

The Magpies are believed to drawing a shortlist of suitable transfer targets, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the latest name understood to be on the list. The Everton talisman is relatively young, home-grown, rapidly improving and has Premier League pedigree. Calvert-Lewin certainly ticks all the boxes.

Calvert-Lewin has come a long way since bursting into the limelight at Everton back in the 2017/18 season, and he is now regarded as one of the best No. 9 in the Premier League. Calvert-Lewin took huge strides under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti and Duncan Ferguson, producing 21 goals and five assists from 39 appearances last term.

He had a decent start to the current ongoing campaign, three goals from 3 outings before suffering a thigh injury that ruled him out of action. His glowing performances and consistency earned him a place Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 in the summer.

Callum Wilson is Newcastle’s current No. 9, but considering his injury-plagued tenure ever since his move from Bournemouth, he is an unreliable option, and with very little quality cover behind him, the Magpies are expected to scour the market to find a quality option to complement their talisman.

Calvert-Lewin would be a statement signing but a very sensible one and can prove to be a huge hit in the North East with Toon fans adoring their goal-scoring No. 9s who can dominate the opponent’s box. However, luring him to Tyneside won’t be that easy with him having three years left on his current contract at Goodison Park.

Moreover, they are facing stiff competition for the Everton hitman who has been on the radar of a number of top Premier League and overseas clubs such as Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United while Real Madrid are the latest to enter the slew. But Newcastle’s riches and spending power make them real contenders for his signature.
