Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Raheem Sterling and could launch a move for the 26-year-old English international.
According to a report by Spanish publication AS, Raheem Sterling has popped up on the radar of Real Madrid over a potential move in next summer’s transfer window. The 26-year-old English international recently hinted that he would be open to leaving Manchester City.
Raheem Sterling joined Manchester City from Liverpool in the summer of 2015 and has since blossomed into one of the best forwards on show in the Premier League. However, over the last two seasons, the player has been a curious case, as he has often delivered the goods for the English national side but has been unable to perform consistently at club level.
The same appears to be the case early in the 2021/22 season, as Sterling has just a goal and an assist apiece in 11 appearances across all competitions. And recently, the 26-year-old seems to have suggested that he would be open to leaving Manchester City, which has evidently piqued the interest of Real Madrid.
Sterling has already been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks, with Newcastle United and Barcelona, in particular, showing a lot of interest. The entry of Real Madrid, though, spices up the speculations surrounding the English international a fair bit now.
This is not the first time that Sterling has emerged on Los Blancos’ radar, having also been linked with them in the summer for a brief period. However, the interest from Real Madrid does make sense amid the continued struggles of Eden Hazard coupled with the inconsistencies of Marco Asensio.
With Hazard, Asensio and Gareth Bale all touted for potential departures from the Santiago Bernabeu next summer, it goes without saying that multiple attacking players could arrive at the club. So, while Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are priority targets for Real Madrid, it will be prudent of them to keep their options.
With Haaland also a key target for Manchester City and Barcelona, the Merengues would be well served with identifying additional options, making Sterling a viable target. Having said that, it will be interesting to see if Real Madrid do firm up their interest in the 26-year-old English international and launch the offensive for him next summer.
