Transfer News: Manchester City considering Alexander Isak move

Manchester City are keeping close tabs on Real Sociedad’s impressive young Swedish striker Alexander Isak.

According to Fichajes, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are keeping a close watch on Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak who continues to impress in La Liga.

The 22-year-old joined the Spanish side from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 and has since steadily built up his reputation as a promising young striker. Possessing the physique and being capable of the spectacular, he has been compared to Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Isak was a well-known talent even during his teenage years. His stint at Dortmund, however, proved anticlimactic, and he ended up moving to Sociedad. He has enjoyed better luck at the Reale Arena, scoring 34 goals and assisting five more in 95 games.

An excellent dribbler and a capable finisher, Isak knows how to use his physicality to the best effect. He is also a threat on the dead ball and can take a mean free-kick. It is clear to see why he is seen as akin to Ibrahimovic.

His performances in Spain have seen several of Europe’s top sides sit up and take notice. The latest to join the fray is Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. The Sky Blues possesses an excellent attacking philosophy but lack an infallible scorer following Sergio Aguero’s departure for FC Barcelona.

While Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres have done their part but lack the same clinical edge that Aguero brought to the side. As things stand, Jesus averages 0.42 goals for City per game while Torres averages 0.37 per game. Both are better than Isak’s 0.35 goals per game for Sociedad.

At 24 and 21, Jesus and Torres are long term prospects. However, the latter is more effective at right-wing and securing another striker could make it possible for City to employ him on the wing.

Isak has much in terms of untapped potential. With the right guidance, there is no reason why he cannot follow in Ibrahimovic’s footsteps. Guardiola remains as good a manager as any to get it out of him. Isak’s strike against Kosovo earlier this month provided a timely reminder of his ability as a footballer.

It is no secret that the English champions are in the market for a striker. Failed moves in the summer for Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo are testament to that. Isak is nowhere established as the two names as mentioned earlier. However, while the world fights over Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic, the Sky Blues could quietly seal a wise move for the young Swede.

Isak recently extended his contract with Sociedad until 2024, giving the Spaniards the advantage in negotiations. Whether their interest is serious enough to make Los Txuri-Urdin an offer they cannot refuse remains to be seen.
