Transfer News: Edinson Cavani on Newcastle United radar

Newcastle United are ready to make their mark with some important signings in the January window, with Edinson Cavani among the targets.

According to Defense Central, Newcastle United may swoop in for Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window as the new owners look ready to make their mark. Apart from the Manchester United star, several other players from across the Premier League and Europe are linked with a new look Magpies.

Newcastle United shook the world of football after their takeover by the Saudi Arabia-backed PIF was confirmed. The big thing about the new ownership is the amount of money they are capable of spending on players, improving the stadium and becoming a force to reckon with in the Premier League and Europe.

On paper, their newfound spending power dwarfs that of any other club on the continent, including big splashers Chelsea, Manchester City and PSG. On the one hand, the media is still debating the new ownership; some sections have already started linking them to important players to be signed in the January window.

From the links that have already emerged in the last couple of days, it seems Newcastle are prepared to spend big to improve their squad in the short term while planning for the long future ahead with some big signings, possibly in the summer. They are already linked with Philippe Coutinho, Nick Pope and Mauro Icardi so far.

Another name to have emerged is that of Edinson Cavani from Manchester United. The media speculate that Newcastle will sign the experienced and explosive striker in January to boost their forward options immediately.

It is believed that the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo will limit the Uruguayan’s game time to the bare minimum and that the Magpies will want to sign him as a short-term solution. The length of the contract they are ready to offer is so far unknown, but the money on offer could be tempting for Cavani to consider an approach.

Newcastle are already planning for the long-term future, as new part-owner Amanda Staveley has already outlined their ambitions to win the Premier League and Champions League in the next five years or so. These are indications the club are planning plenty of new signings in the next few windows, and some big names are expected to arrive.

For now, on the Cavani links, more information shall arrive in the coming weeks leading up to the January window. And in case Cavani’s situation at Manchester United does not improve, it may be a good decision for the Uruguayan to switch sides and take up an offer that benefits him professionally and financially.
