Barcelona are reportedly eyeing 32-year-old Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ander Herrera as a potential midfield signing next summer.
According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Barcelona are keen on making a reinforcement for their midfield unit in next summer’s transfer window. To that end, they have now set their sights on Ander Herrera, with the 32-year-old emerging as a potential holding midfield option.
Ander Herrera joined Paris Saint-Germain from Manchester United in the summer of 2019 and has since continued to be a tenacious performer for the Ligue 1 heavyweights. While he was largely a rotation option for Les Parisiens initially, the Spaniard has grown in his role of late and has been a key figure for the club early in the season.
In 11 appearances so far this term, Herrera has been strangely (on a positive note) prolific so far, chipping in with four goals and two assists. His strong start to the season seems to have captured the attention of some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Barcelona keen on signing him.
Barcelona are reported to be in the market for a central midfield reinforcement and for good reason after choosing not to sign a replacement for Miralem Pjanic and Ilaix Moriba. Such a decision has left Ronald Koeman shortchanged in the midfield department, with Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong the only senior options at his disposal on a reliable basis.
As a result, the Barcelona manager has had his hand forced, with Gavi and Nico Gonzalez being used extensively early in the season. Such a situation is hardly ideal for any manager, especially with Busquets now in the twilight of his career. As a result, the Blaugrana have been linked with several midfielders of late, with Franck Kessie one of the options on their radar.
The report, though, mentions Ander Herrera as a target as well, with the 32-year-old Spaniard being viewed as a potential replacement for Busquets. Such a suggestion is quite odd to say the least, considering the PSG midfielder is only a year younger than Busquets, meaning he will only be a short-term solution at best.
However, Barcelona’s attempts to sign Herrera might not bear fruit either considering their strained relationship with the Ligue 1 giants. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Barcelona do end up making a move for the 32-year-old or if they identify some other alternative for him instead.
