Barcelona are reportedly considering the prospect of re-signing former academy man Mateu Morey who currently plies his trade for Borussia Dortmund.

According to a report from Spanish publication Fichajes, Barcelona are mulling over the possibility of bringing back former trainee Mateu Morey from German giants Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window next year.

Morey signed for Barcelona’s fabled La Masia youth academy from RCD Mallorca in 2015 and went on to spend four years within the system. While he never played for the Catalans’ first team, he did make a handful of appearances for the club’s Under-19 outfit in the UEFA Youth League before making his way to Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

Morey’s time in Germany, however, has been riddled with injuries. The 21-year-old had to battle with shoulder issues in his first season at the club and while he was getting some regular minutes in the last season, he was hit by an ACL injury earlier this year, which sidelined him for the foreseeable future.

To date, Morey has managed just 29 first-team appearances for the Black and Yellows, registering four assists in the process. Courtesy of his serious knee injury, the Spaniard is expected to return to action only next year. However, that has not dissuaded Barcelona from considering making a swoop for him come next summer.

Barcelona strengthened their right-back department this past summer with the signing of Emerson Royal but decided to sell him to Tottenham Hotspur late in the transfer window. This left them with only Sergino Dest as the natural right-sided full-back in the squad with Oscar Mingueza and Sergi Roberto as backup options.

However, as evidenced in recent games, Mingueza does not exactly look like the right fit in the position while Roberto is staring at an uncertain future at the club. Indeed, the 29-year-old is in the final year of his contract with Barcelona and is yet to come to an agreement over a new deal that would also require him to take a pay cut following in the footsteps of the other club captains.

With there being the possibility that ends up leaving Barcelona in January or in the summer and Dest being used as left-back of late, there will be room for another right-back at Camp Nou in the near future. This has led the Catalans to consider the possibility of bringing Morey back from Dortmund as a backup option to Dest.

Despite his current injury hiatus, the 21-year-old did display good form during the last season and knows the club well. However, he is not the only right-back Barcelona are considering, with AFC Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui also emerging as an option, while Dodo of Shakhtar Donetsk is also on their radar.
