Transfer News: Real Madrid reignite interest in Diogo Dalot

Real Madrid have once again set their sights on Diogo Dalot, with the Manchester United defender reportedly a target for Carlo Ancelotti.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid have reignited their interest in Diogo Dalot through Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian tactician has identified the Manchester United defender as one of the options to bolster the right-back slot amid Dani Carvajal’s injury woes.

Dalot joined Manchester United from FC Porto in the summer of 2018, with then manager Jose Mourinho creating a lot of hype around him at the time of his arrival. However, three years since completing his switch to Old Trafford and the Portuguese defender is yet to establish himself as a regular for the Red Devils.

To date, the 22-year-old has made just 39 appearances for Manchester United, which is just six more than the times he featured for AC Milan in a single season during his loan spell. However, it seems as if Dalot is being counted upon by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who blocked a potential summer exit. The player, though, has his fair share of suitors, one of them being Real Madrid.

The Merengues are set to be forced into the transfer market for a right-back owing to the fitness struggles of Dani Carvajal. A key figure for Real Madrid during their recent successful period, the Spaniard has had his game-time severely restricted by a spate of injuries in the past year or so, with another injury currently leaving him sidelined as well.

Alvaro Odriozola, who joined Real Madrid right around the time Dalot arrived at Manchester United, has not been able to make much of an impression over the course of his stint with the club and is currently out on loan at Fiorentina. And as per widespread reports, it is likely that he will be sold by Los Blancos next summer.

So, while Lucas Vazquez has been a solid performer as a makeshift right-back, Real Madrid are expected to take the prudent step in signing a natural right-back, making Dalot a viable target. Apart from the Manchester United defender, Carlo Ancelotti also has Aurelio Buta and Denzel Dumfries on his radar.

However, as per the report, Real Madrid would prefer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, even though the pursuit of the Liverpool defender will be complicated. With that in mind, it remains to be seen if their attention turns to Dalot in case they are unable to land Alexander-Arnold.
