Manchester City had rebuffed Borussia Dortmund’s €15 million attempts to sign Liam Delap in the summer transfer window.
A recent report from Football Insider has revealed Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Liam Delap. The Bundesliga giants were apparently keen on securing the services of the Manchester City youngster in the summer and had even attempted a bid of €15 million.
But the offer was immediately rejected by Man City, who consider the youngster as a vital part of their future, with Pep Guardiola, in particular, a key admirer. In fact, Delap’s presence in the side was one of the key reasons behind the club’s decision to not sign a centre-forward, after missing out on Harry Kane.
A product of the MCFC academy that had famously produced ex-Dortmund superstar Jadon Sancho, Delap has enjoyed stellar success in youth competitions and is regarded as one of the most talented forwards in the country, though he is yet to be formally integrated into the first team.
Delap has featured in three competitive games for Manchester City, notably scoring in his debut against AFC Bournemouth, in the Carabao Cup last season. Unfortunately, the young forward was not involved in the recent cup game against Wycombe, where the Citizens registered a 6-1 victory.
Nevertheless, one would assume Dortmund’s pursuit of Delap had stemmed from the uncertain future of Erling Haaland, as the youngster can only serve as a direct replacement for the talented Norwegian. Not to mention, the Black and Yellows had already signed Donyell Malen in the summer, which means the City youngster was identified as more like-for-like an alternative for Haaland rather than a second striker.
Haaland, for his part, has already been strongly linked with a move for Etihad Stadium next summer. His father’s strong ties with the club make the Citizens one of the favourites, although it appears Dortmund have already started talks over a potential new extension with the hopes of not only erasing his reported release clause but also convince him to stay for a further year.
Delap is not the only Englishman Dortmund were looking for this summer either, with the Black and Yellows being rebuffed in their attempts to sign Callum Hudson-Odoi as well. However, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for young Delap, who has not featured in a single game and might fancy a loan move away from Etihad.
