Chelsea and Tottenham are keeping tabs on highly-rated Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, as the 20-year-old could move clubs next summer.
According to 90Min, interest in Ajax’s 20-year-old defender Jurrien Timber is on the rise, with the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham keen. Both clubs are joined by a host of other names, including Paris Saint-Germain, as Ajax could brace themselves for a possible bidding war next summer.
The report suggests both clubs have been tracking the youngster for nearly two years and are convinced of his qualities. It also vaguely suggests, the London club view Timber similar to a certain William Gallas, who played for both clubs at some stage of his brilliant career.
Timber enjoyed a breakthrough season with Ajax in 2020/21, making 20 appearances in the Eredivisie. However, there has been interest in him well before that. While his current deal lasts until 2024, Ajax are relaxed and bracing themselves for offers next summer.
The club might not entertain offers in January as the defender is taking strides in the right direction while also raking up six caps for the national side. Ajax expect Timber to develop further, and if the player has a good season this term, his value could go higher.
Chelsea are looking at him to add another quality player to their ranks. It’s a common understanding that the Blues always value a young player, as in recent years, they have sent a host of names on loan for further development. The Premier League club have made important sales of their young, fringe stars in recent windows.
Alternatively, they could still sign Timber and develop him into a first-team star. They might have a vacancy next summer with the future of Antonio Rudiger treading into uncertain territory. However, the club may not necessarily view Timber as a replacement for the German but would certainly jump at the chance of signing a young, quality prospect.
As for Tottenham, they are looking to embark on the next phase of rebuilding their squad. Technical director Fabio Paratici is looking at players of a young age profile, and Timber surely fits the bill. They are also linked with a move for another Ajax star Ryan Gravenberch for the next summer window.
However, with many other big clubs vying for Timber, a decision for the player will come down to which club promises the best conditions. It remains to be seen if either Chelsea or Spurs manage to prise him away, but it looks likely the 20-year-old will move away from Ajax next summer.
