Transfer News: Liverpool starlet Rhys Williams set for Swansea City loan

Liverpool defender Rhys Williams is reportedly on his way to EFL Championship club Swansea City on a loan deal on the transfer deadline day.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool youngster, Rhys Williams is set to complete a season-long loan switch to EFL Championship outfit Swansea City on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

Williams is a product of the Liverpool youth academy. Having risen through the ranks, the 20-year-old spent time away on loan at Kidderminster Harriers in the first half of the 2019/20 season. And eight months later, in September last year, the young defender made his first-team bow for the Reds.

Williams went on to feature as many as 19 times across all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side in what was a breakthrough year for the youngster. And while there were a few iffy displays here and there, the England Under-21 international made a solid enough impression.

However, come new season, Williams finds himself way down the pecking order at Liverpool. His opportunities last term came due to injuries to the frontline defenders Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip. However, the trio is back fit and available for selection in the new term.

In addition to that, Liverpool have also brought in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig this summer, which remains their only signing of the ongoing transfer window so far. All this has meant Williams, along with Nat Phillips, has become a fifth/sixth choice centre-back at Anfield this season, which means playing time will come at a premium, if any.

As a result, Liverpool are open to loaning Williams out for the rest of the campaign, with interest coming from Swansea City. The Welsh outfit are, in fact, said to be in talks with the Merseyside giants over a temporary deal for the 20-year-old centre-back, with a move expected to be finalised imminently.

Considering his situation, a loan move would be the ideal scenario for Williams to continue his development. The Reds have already loaned out fellow defender Ben Davies to Sheffield United and Phillips, too, could be on his way out before the transfer window closes in a few hours in search of regular game-time.
