Transfer News: Real Madrid plotting 2022 Bosman move for Antonio Rudiger

Real Madrid are reportedly plotting to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger on a Bosman move in next summer’s transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid are closely monitoring the contract situation of Antonio Rudiger. The Spanish giants are hoping he rejects the offer of a new contract by Chelsea before they pounce on him in next summer’s transfer window on a Bosman move.

Antonio Rudiger has gone on quite a topsy-turvy ride since joining Chelsea from AS Roma in the summer of 2017. Now a key figure under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel, it was not long ago when the 28-year-old was frozen out of the first-team picture, back when Frank Lampard was in-charge of the club.

To date, the German defender has turned out 152 times for Chelsea while chipping in with seven goals and three assists along the way. However, with Rudiger now in the final year of his deal at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are in a precarious situation over his future. Such a situation has also piqued the interest of Real Madrid.

The eagerness to sign Rudiger makes sense for Real Madrid in the wake of the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. While Ramos’s void could well be filled in the long run by David Alaba, Carlo Ancelotti only has Eder Militao and Nacho as the other reliable options for the heart of the defence, with the latter possibly being a backup option over the course of the season.

As a result, it is imperative that Real Madrid sign a centre-back, with a number of options emerging on their radar. One such option is Rudiger, although it has now emerged that Real Madrid are only considering a Bosman move for the Chelsea defender.

Chelsea, on their part, are desperate to tie the 28-year-old down to a new contract, having opened talks with his representatives over a renewal. However, if Rudiger chooses not to commit his long-term future to the Blues, Real Madrid could come calling in 2022, with a Bosman move in the works.

For now, the major talking point around Rudiger remains his contract situation and whether he will choose to put pen to a new long-term deal with Chelsea. If not, then it might not be surprising to see him make his way to Real Madrid next summer on a free transfer.
