Aston Villa reportedly remain interested in securing the signing of Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell, who is valued at around £40 million.

According to a report from the Express, Aston Villa are continuing to monitor Norwich City star Todd Cantwell and a move could take place before the end of the ongoing transfer window.

A product of the Norwich City youth academy, Cantwell has grown into a mainstay in the first-team at Carrow Road after a brief loan stint with Fortuna Sittard during the 2017/18 season. The 23-year-old was a major contributor to the Canaries’ promotion to the Premier League in 2018/19 and had a fairly solid debut campaign in the top-flight as well, even though it ended with relegation.

Cantwell once again essayed a key role as Daniel Farke’s men have made it back to the Premier League again. To date, the Englishman has featured 103 times for Norwich, scoring 14 goals and setting up 12 more. Largely used as a left-sided midfielder, the 23-year-old can play as a No. 10 or on the right flank as well.

Cantwell has been on the radars of several Premier League clubs in the past, with Aston Villa showing a strong interest in his services of late. The Midlands outfit lost their club captain and talisman Jack Grealish, who completed a British record transfer to champions Manchester City earlier this summer.

Although they have brought in Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia, whom they plucked away from Norwich, there could be need for another wide player in Dean Smith’s squad, as per the report.

It is claimed that Bertrand Traore has picked up a hamstring injury during a behind-closed-doors friendly this past weekend, which could sideline him. Furthermore, Trezeguet is also out with an injury and is not expected to be back until the new year. Furthermore, Anwar El Ghazi has been linked with an exit from Villa Park while recent reports indicate that Traore could also be allowed to leave.

Such a situation would warrant the addition of another wide midfielder, making Cantwell a viable transfer target. While Norwich might be reluctant to let go of the 23-year-old with the season already underway, their recent acquisition of winger Christos Tzolis could help them make up for his departure.

It now remains to be seen if Aston Villa do decide to make a push to sign the 23-year-old Cantwell, who is valued at £40 million by the Canaries, or decide to stick with their current roster.
