Official: Tammy Abraham joins AS Roma

Tammy Abraham have officially completed his switch from Chelsea to AS Roma, joining the Serie A club in a €40 million deal.

AS Roma have made an official statement to announce that they have secured the services of Tammy Abraham on a five-year contract that runs until 30 June 2026. Chelsea will have a buy-back clause worth €80 million to re-sign the 23-year-old English forward, which will be valid from June 2023.

Tammy Abraham is leaving Chelsea after a 17-year stint at the club, having joined the club’s famed academy in 2004. The English forward subsequently progressed through the ranks at the west London club before breaking into their first-team setup in 2016. However, it was only after the end of loan spells at Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa that Abraham finally got his big break at Stamford Bridge.

The 2019/20 season indeed proved to be memorable for the 23-year-old, as he finished atop the scoring charts at Chelsea, finding the back of the net 18 times in 47 games. However, 2020/21 was a season to forget for Abraham, as he fell down the pecking order following the arrival of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, with Thomas Tuchel completely shunning him by the end of the season.

Things reached a head for the youngster in the summer transfer window, as he sought a move away from Chelsea, with the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham United and Arsenal all being linked with him. The English international was, in fact, intent on joining Arsenal, who never really managed to table a bid for Chelsea to consider.

This gave AS Roma a sniff into possibly landing him and they quickly submitted their offer. And now, the transfer has been completed in no time, with ex-Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho managing to get his man on board at Stadio Olimpico, with Abraham potentially joining the Giallorossi as a long-term replacement for Edin Dzeko, who has made the switch to Serie A champions Inter Milan.

Upon completing the move from Chelsea, Abraham expressed his delight at making the switch to one of Serie A’s biggest clubs, saying, “You can sense when a club really wants you – and Roma made their interest clear immediately. Roma is a club that deserves to be fighting for titles and trophies.”

“I’ve had the experience of winning major trophies and I want to be in those competitions again – so I want to help this team to achieve that and get to the level where Roma should be. It’s a massive honour to be the No. 9 at this club and I just can’t wait to get started and to help the team.”

Abraham has signed a five-year contract with Roma, who have paid Chelsea €40 million (to be paid in installments) to secure his services. And as per Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will also have an €80 million buyback clause to re-sign the 23-year-old, which will be valid from June 2023. For now, the English forward is set for a new adventure and it remains to be seen if he resurrects his career at Roma.
