In the search for a new number three in goal, Chelsea have set their sights on Sergio Romero, who left Manchester United this summer.
A recent report from The Telegraph has offered an interesting update on Chelsea’s search for a new goalkeeper. It seems Sergio Romero has been identified as their latest target, with the club considering a move for the Argentine ‘keeper, who left Manchester United in the summer after seeing out his contract.
Formerly of Sampdoria, Romero initially arrived in England way back in 2015, in a free transfer. During his five-year stint at Old Trafford, the goalkeeper could only muster 61 competitive appearances for the club, largely playing second fiddle to the undisputed number one in David de Gea.
This past season, Romero even became a third-choice in goal after the return of Dean Henderson from Sheffield United. The Argentine failed to appear even once in any competition in 2020/21. It ultimately compelled him to leave Old Trafford in the summer despite both de Gea and Henderson also facing an uncertain future at the club.
The former Racing Club ace is currently a free agent. But he has no shortage of suitors, with Chelsea now considering a move for the experienced Argentine, as they look to add backup for Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Having just fared the entire 2020/21 campaign as a third-choice goalkeeper for Manchester United, it is difficult to imagine the 34-year-old moving to Stamford Bridge. But, Kepa has been linked with a move away from London, thus paving the way for Romero to potentially become a second choice next season.
The former United man is Chelsea’s best bet by far, given how they have failed in their pursuit of a goalkeeper this summer. One of their early summer targets in Jiri Pavlenka was talented, but his tender age makes him an unrealistic target for the Blues. Wayne Hennessey was a better option, on that note, but the veteran has recently joined Burnley.
Another potential option is Marcus Bettinelli, who is also a free agent after leaving Fulham in the summer. But like Pavlenka, the Englishman is yet to reach his thirties, making Romero, aged 34, an ideal option as Thomas Tuchel hopes to find an experienced and composed backup for his main man Mendy next season.
