Barcelona have reportedly turned their attention towards 26-year-old goalkeeper Alex Remiro over a possible move in next summer’s transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona’s quest to sign a goalkeeper has taken them to fellow La Liga club Real Sociedad. Alex Remiro is the latest to emerge on the radar of the Catalan giants, who are eyeing the 26-year-old for a potential move in next summer’s transfer window.
Alex Remiro joined Real Sociedad from another Basque club in Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2019, and his career has kick-started at long last with La Real. In fact, the 26-year-old goalkeeping ace did not make a single appearance for Bilbao and only flourished during his loan stints at other clubs while he was with Los Leones.
The move to Real Sociedad has worked out well for Remiro, who has amassed 80 appearances so far for the La Liga outfit, keeping 28 clean sheets in the process. However, with his current contract with Real Sociedad expiring in a little under two years’ time, one club is keeping a keen eye on the developments over his renewal – Barcelona.
Barcelona are touted to be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer amid a continued transition under the tutelage of Ronald Koeman. The need for a shot-stopper has cropped up due to Neto’s desire to depart Camp Nou to secure regular game-time. The Brazilian ace has been heavily linked with Arsenal, West Ham United and a few others and is expected to leave this summer.
As a result, Barcelona have had to dip their toes in the transfer market for a goalkeeper, with Jordi Masip among those heavily linked with a potential summer switch to the Nou Camp. And Remiro has now popped up on the Blaugrana’s radar as well, although he is unlikely to be approached this summer.
The report suggests that Barcelona will keep a lookout over how his negotiations to sign a new deal progress. If Remiro is no closer to penning a renewal next year, then Barcelona could well launch the offensive for the 26-year-old, who would then be available for a cut-price fee.
As for the 2021/22 season, Barcelona are ready to impose their faith in Inaki Pena to be deputy to Marc-Andre ter Stegen if he does not force a summer exit like Neto. In case he does, Barcelona will prioritise signing a veteran goalkeeper, who can then soon be replaced by someone like Remiro, with Aitor Fernandez another such experienced shot-stopper linked with the Catalan giants.
