Transfer News: Barcelona lining up Lorenzo Insigne swoop

Barcelona are reportedly stepping up their efforts to secure the services of Lorenzo Insigne in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Barcelona are taking a serious interest in Lorenzo Insigne. The Blaugrana are plotting a move to sign the 30-year-old Italian international from Napoli in the summer transfer window.

Lorenzo Insigne has established himself as one of the best players on show in Serie A ever since his breakthrough campaign with Napoli in 2012/13. Now the club captain for the Partenopei, the 30-year-old is a mainstay for the Italian giants while also being a first-choice option for his national side.

As far as his time at Napoli so far goes, Insigne has amassed 397 appearances for the club with 109 goals and 85 assists to show for his efforts along the way. However, the Italian international is facing an uncertain future at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium owing to the fact that his deal with Napoli ends next summer, with the club in dire straits on the financial front. This has alerted Barcelona.

Barcelona themselves are in a financial quagmire presently, but are working towards balancing their books while concentrating on either free transfers or cost-effective moves. Such an outlook has seen them already bolstering their attack by signing Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero.

At the same time, Barcelona are also staring at the prospect of offloading Antoine Griezmann amid links with Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United. Griezmann’s departure will prompt the Catalan giants to sign a replacement, which is where Insigne comes into the picture.

The 30-year-old is unlikely to command a high transfer fee, seeing as he is now in the final year of his Napoli contract. On top of that, his versatility would enable Ronald Koeman deploy Insigne in several ways depending on how Barcelona line up in a particular game, which perhaps explains why he is being hotly pursued.

The Blaugrana now seem to be seriously interested in signing the Italian international, with a move being formulated. What now remains to be seen is if Barcelona do end up swooping Insigne away from Napoli or if the Serie A heavyweights can manage to keep a firm hold of their club captain heading into the 2021/22 season.
