Transfer News: Chelsea enter race for Kieran Trippier

Chelsea could enter the race to sign Kieran Trippier to strengthen their right side, with Manchester United also heavily linked with the Atletico Madrid star.

According to Fichajes, the race for Atletico Madrid defender Kieran trippier could intensify, with Chelsea reportedly hunting for the right-back. Manchester United are also very interested in bringing the former Tottenham full-back back to England.

Chelsea have been keeping an eye on the market for right-backs this summer, with Thomas Tuchel keen to strengthen that side of the pitch. The German manager wants to add to the current quality after winning the Champions League and feels the Blues are somewhat short at right wing-back.

Reece James is the only viable option currently on the ranks at Stamford Bridge, as Cesar Azpilicueta is considered a mainstay in central defence. Chelsea were previously linked with a big-money move for Achraf Hakimi, but the Moroccan has moved to PSG in recent days, leaving the hunt open for the Blues.

Other names include Joakim Maehle of Atalanta and Trippier’s Atletico teammate Marcos Llorente, who has played plenty of games in a full-back position. However, Trippier could become an important target for Chelsea in the coming days, although the competition from Manchester United could prove to be problematic.

Trippier had a great season at Atletico Madrid, winning the La Liga. With England at UEFA Euro 2020, the full-back has played an important role for the national team so far, which has only led to more speculation regarding his future. The former Tottenham star could be interested in making a return to the Premier League.

Manchester United were quoted a €40 million price for Trippier, which seems somewhat excessive. But with a substantial time left on his Atletico Madrid deal, the Spanish champions may not necessarily want to sell the defender. Having said that, amid poor financial conditions for clubs across Europe, Los Rojiblancos could be forced to accept a reasonable offer for the full-back.

Chelsea and Manchester United could be attractive destinations for Trippier, given that both clubs are expected to challenge on all fronts next season. However, if the right-back decides to move back, the offer and, more importantly, the number of games he will play next season will be crucial, which both teams could offer in equal measure.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, are fully expected to demand good value for the player. However, they might cave in just below their asking price, although it will still be a substantial fee. Either way, Trippier will relish a chance to play in the Premier League once again, and either of Chelsea and Manchester United could end up landing him.
