Chelsea have approached Atletico Madrid, exploring the possibility of completing the signing of Saul Niguez this summer.
During his Twitch Livestream, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on Saul Niguez’s situation at Atletico Madrid. As reported by SI, it appears Chelsea have joined the race to sign the in-demand midfielder, who is expected to leave Wanda Metropolitano in light of the club’s financial difficulties.
Chelsea are not the only Premier League interested in the services of Saul, though. A few days ago, Liverpool reportedly received the green light to make an offer for the Atletico Madrid star, with the newly-crowned Spanish champions ready to cash in on him for the desired price this summer.
Liverpool have apparently identified Saul as an ideal long-term replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum. However, the player is expected to cost somewhere in the region of €80 million, making Chelsea the potential favourites in this chase.
After securing the UEFA Champions League title last season, the Blues are ready to splash the cash in the summer. Club owner Roman Abramovich has already been left impressed by the progress the team has made under Thomas Tuchel, giving the German the green light to spend silly money in the market.
One of Tuchel’s main priorities in the market right now is to find an upgrade for Mateo Kovacic. The Blues are running out of options in midfield as well, after recently sanctioning the loan move for youngster Billy Gilmour.
In addition to Gilmour, Chelsea are ready to cash in on fringe players like Ross Barkley and Tiemoue Bakayoko, who is courted by his former club AC Milan. It paves the way nicely for Saul to become an integral part of the club’s midfield unit alongside Jorginho and N’Golo Kante next season.
The Spaniard didn’t have a particularly great season at Atletico Madrid this past season. Despite winning the title, his importance in the first-team took a massive hit thanks to Marcos Llorente’s rapid rise to prominence, combined with the revival of Thomas Lemar.
A move away from Madrid appears the most likely option for Saul, with Atletico ready to use his sale as a financial injection. It will be interesting to where the midfielder ends up, though, having been courted by Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool among many other top European clubs this summer.
