Erling Haaland is interested in a move to Chelsea, but there could be unprecedented challenges posed by a ‘Get Out’ clause that agent Mino Raiola wants in the contract.

According to Ian McGarry on The Transfer Window podcast, Erling Haaland remains interested in a move to Chelsea, but external factors could pose a hurdle. That Hurdle specifically is Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola and his demands for a ‘Get Out’ clause in the Chelsea contract.

With Chelsea already locked in talks with Borussia Dortmund for Erling Haaland, there were earlier reservations from the player’s camp over a move. The reason could be that Haaland dreamt of a move to one of Real Madrid or Barcelona, a bracket Chelsea doesn’t necessarily fall in.

However, owing to the market conditions and Chelsea’s offer might have tempted Haaland towards Chelsea. The fact that owner Roman Abramovich’s intervention to participate in discussions with the player could also have affected the decision. Last week, popular journalist Erkum Konur also suggested Haaland has no problems with the contract on offer.

A new development has occurred due to agent’s Mino Raiola’s insistence on a ‘get out’ clause. Raiola does not want too many hassles if Haaland decides to move on in the future  This is why he wants the ‘Get Out’ clause in the contract; similar to Haaland’s release clause at Dortmund, which lets him leave for a reduced price next summer.

However, Chelsea are not so keen to bow down to such demands and would like to sign the player on their terms alone. Chelsea have had a history of selling players off when they still held some value in the transfer market, similar to Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois, both to Real Madrid in successive seasons.

Despite the player hoping to secure a move, Raiola reportedly wants Haaland to secure his future in a manner that could enable him to move swiftly elsewhere if things did not work at Chelsea. The Blues though, known for their hard negotiation tactics, will see such demands as a stumbling block and may decide to pull the plug.

However, Haaland is such a coveted player with a tremendous value that the Champions League holders would want to negotiate over the deal further. We can expect this transfer story to drag on for a little while as all parties come to a mutual understanding over the structure of a possible deal.

Is Raiola right to want a ‘Get Out’ clause inserted into Haaland’s contract at Chelsea? Or are the Blues better off than giving control of transfers of one of the most valuable players in the world in the hands of one of the most notorious agents in world football? It will certainly be interesting to see how things develop on this front in the coming weeks.
