Transfer News: Chelsea set sights on Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Chelsea have expressed interest in Everton marksman Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with Thomas Tuchel determined to shore up the attacking unit.

According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Chelsea are ready to invest in a new centre forward in the summer. It appears Thomas Tuchel is not convinced with the quality of Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi, whereas top target Erling Haaland is expected to cost a fortune.

As a result, Chelsea are ready to raid Everton for the services of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The Englishman enjoyed an extraordinary 2020/21 campaign at Goodison Park, becoming a lethal goalscorer under the leadership of current Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Standing at 1.89m, Calvert-Lewin’s imposing frame gives him a considerable advantage in aerial and physical duels. It makes him a tailor-made fit for the Premier League, with the forward notching up as many as 16 goals this past season.

The 24-year-old has already been linked with a move to Manchester United, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer determined to find a long-term replacement for Edinson Cavani. Chelsea’s recent interest, though, is now welcome news for the Red Devils, who have recently announced the arrival of Jadon Sancho.

Despite enjoying a successful end to the 2020/21 campaign, the Blues are facing a crisis in the goalscoring department. Last summer’s marquee forward, Timo Werner, has performed well below expectations so far for Chelsea, while Abraham could be set for a move away from Stamford Bridge.

The Englishman is not highly rated by Tuchel, who prefers either more physical or technical forward. As such, Abraham has been linked with a move to Aston Villa, among many other clubs. Chelsea’s other option is Michy Batshuayi, who is yet to even make himself a crucial member of the first-team since joining from Marseille years ago.

It leaves Tuchel with Olivier Giroud as the only viable goalscoring option upfront. However, the experienced forward has reportedly become a target for AC Milan despite signing a one-year contract extension with Chelsea earlier this summer.

This is where Calvert-Lewin could prove to be an ideal fix. The Everton forward has garnered a lot of experience at the highest level of football and is even representing England in the ongoing European Championship. His recent success in front of goal is indicative of his improvement as well.

However, what makes him an appealing target for Chelsea is his work rate. The 24-year-old forward offers a lot of running that goes hand in hand with Tuchel’s complex system that requires the attackers to consistently press high. It makes “DCL” an ideal option for the Blues, although they are reportedly still in contact with Haaland over a potential summer move.
