Chelsea are reportedly battling Real Madrid in the race to sign Leonardo Spinazzola from AS Roma in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Italian outlet Il Messaggero, the race to sign Leonardo Spinazzola in the summer transfer window is heating up. Real Madrid and Chelsea are set to lock horns for the 28-year-old Italian international, who could be set to leave AS Roma soon.
Leonardo Spinazzola has found stable footing in his career since joining AS Roma from Juventus in the summer of 2019. Over the last couple of seasons, he has progressed superbly in the Italian capital and is coming off a solid 2020/21 campaign, wherein he garnered a tally of two goals and eight assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.
His performance levels have only gone to the next level at UEFA Euro 2020, where he has been one of the best players on show. The 28-year-old Italian international has, as a result, invariably caught the attention of two of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Real Madrid and Chelsea among his suitors in the summer transfer window.
The continued interest from Real Madrid is interesting, considering recent reports have suggested that Marcelo is set to stay put at the Santiago Bernabeu, becoming the new club captain under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti. With Ferland Mendy already going strong at the club, it will be interesting to see how Spinazzola will fit in the scheme of things if signed.
On the other hand, Chelsea have a more urgent need of signing a left wing-back, with Ben Chilwell likely to be left as the only natural option at Thomas Tuchel’s disposal. Indeed, both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri have been touted for a summer departure from Stamford Bridge, and the Blues will need a replacement for the duo.
To that end, Spinazzola is a viable target for Chelsea, who are now set to battle Real Madrid in the race to sign the 28-year-old from AS Roma. Speaking of the Giallorossi, they are open to offers for the Italian international but are not looking for any part-exchange deals.
With the terms laid in front of both Chelsea and Real Madrid, an intriguing transfer saga seems to be getting forged. It will now be interesting to see if either of the European heavyweights land Spinazzola in the summer transfer window or if he stays put in Stadio Olimpico.
