Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland is reportedly interested in joining Chelsea, who are keen on signing a top-class striker this summer.

A recent report from Telegraph has offered an update on the Erling Haaland transfer saga. It is believed that the Borussia Dortmund forward is keen on joining Chelsea, should the Premier League giants manage to agree terms with his club, either this summer or the next.

Earlier reports suggested that the Blues are aware of the financial difficulties they will face in acquiring the services of Haaland. The player is reportedly valued at a staggering £170 million, with his agent Mino Raiola also demanding a pay package of £300,000-a-week that will make him the highest-paid player at Chelsea.

Going all out for Haaland, therefore, is certainly a massive risk, as far as Chelsea are concerned. It will have a massive impact on their wage structure, perhaps even forcing Thomas Tuchel to offload a few star players, in addition to the unwanted ones like Tammy Abraham, who is courted by Newcastle United, albeit on a loan deal.

Haaland’s valuation, though, is hardly surprising as the Dortmund forward has lit up the Bundesliga ever since joining the club at the start of 2020. In just 59 matches, the Norwegian forward has netted a remarkable 57 goals for the Black and Yellows, over 40 of which came in the recently-concluded 2020/21 campaign.

Chelsea’s interest in the 20-year-old, meanwhile, stems from the struggles of Timo Werner. The German international simply has not offered the productivity since joining from Leipzig, leaving Tuchel desperate for a reliable goalscorer who can complement an otherwise excellent creative trifecta of Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount.

Although it appears Haaland is keen on joining Chelsea even if the Premier League giants strike a move for next summer, one might argue that the Blues might not get another opportunity to sign the forward, as the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are going to come flocking in once the recession is over.

It puts Chelsea in a precarious position, especially with other targets like Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku also unlikely to come to Stamford Bridge this summer. It might ultimately force Tuchel to make do with Werner for at least another season before they come roaring in for one of the three players next year.

The recent contract extension of Olivier Giroud is perhaps a good indication of that policy, although it must be pointed out that Chelsea are in a better financial shape than their Premier League rivals and can afford to spend silly money if required.
