Liverpool and Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention towards 28-year-old Brazilian defender Diego Carlos over a summer move.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Diego Carlos has once again popped up on the radars of Liverpool and Manchester United over a move in the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old Brazilian defender could be set to leave Sevilla ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Diego Carlos joined Sevilla from Nantes in the summer of 2019 and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most consistent performers in La Liga. A mainstay at the back for Los Nervionenses, the 28-year-old has impressed with his tenacity, going on to amass 91 appearances for the Andalusian club.

His exploits have attracted the interest of some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with 2020/21 likely to be his final campaign at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. The two most successful English clubs are currently hot on his trails, with Liverpool and Manchester United keen on signing Carlos.

Liverpool seem to have learned their lessons after failing to sign a centre-back last summer. And, having landed a couple of central defenders in the January transfer window, the Reds look set to repeat the trick this coming summer, and for good reason, considering Ben Davies is yet to make an appearance for the club while Ozan Kabak appears unlikely to be signed permanently.

So, while Ibrahima Konate looks destined to arrive at Anfield, signing a second centre-back will be a step in the right direction despite Nathaniel Phillips’s impressive displays. To that end, Matthias Ginter is one of the players linked with Liverpool, with Carlos a viable target as well. Manchester United, on the other hand, have a more urgent need for a central defender.

While Harry Maguire has been largely excellent after a slow start to the season, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have been inconsistent while also being riddled with injuries. Another indication of the former’s blow-hot-blow-cold nature was evident in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham on Tuesday.

As a result, it is clear that the Red Devils can do with a top class centre-back, with Pau Torres, Jules Kounde and Raphael Varane, who has also been linked with Liverpool, all being named as potential targets, with Carlos now emerging on their radar. And, Manchester United are prepared to lodge a considerable offer for Sevilla to consider.

Liverpool, like Manchester United, are also readying an offer for the Brazilian defender and it will be interesting to see if either club can convince Sevilla to part with Carlos with their initial bid. For now, it looks like Carlos could be set to leave the Spanish giants this coming summer.
