Chelsea have reportedly asked about the possibility of signing Borussia Monchengladbach winger Jonas Hofmann in the summer transfer window.
According to a report from Sport BILD, Premier League heavyweights Chelsea have made an enquiry with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach over the availability of 28-year-old winger Jonas Hofmann ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
Hofmann came through the youth ranks at TSG Hoffenheim and spent time with Borussia Dortmund as well, before securing a transfer to Gladbach in January 2016. Since arriving at Borussia Park, the winger has grown into an integral member of the team, racking up over 150 appearances in which he has produced a tally of 22 goals and 33 assists.
Hofmann has enjoyed a particularly productive 2020/21 campaign, having managed a return of eight goals and 13 assists from 32 games across all competitions. And his exploits over the course of the season have seemingly put him on the radars of Premier League bigwigs Chelsea.
The 2020/21 UEFA Champions League finalists have a loaded attacking department, with the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi all options for the two positions behind the central striker at manager Thomas Tuchel’s disposal.
However, Ziyech has struggled to make the kind of impact that was expected of him upon arriving from Ajax last summer, with reports claiming that Chelsea could use him as a makeweight in their pursuit of Sevilla defender Jules Kounde. With Havertz preferred in the No. 9 role of late and Callum Hudson-Odoi not kicking on as expected, another new wide player would not go amiss for the west London giants.
To that end, Chelsea have recently been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund superstar Jadon Sancho. But given the number of clubs interested in the Englishman and his transfer valuation, Hofmann could be a cost-effective alternative for the Blues to look at, heading into the summer.
The 28-year-old has a contract with Borussia Monchengladbach till the summer of 2023 with no release clause. However, the report does mention that Bundesliga outfit would consider a sale if they come across an offer that appeals to them. It also states that apart from Chelsea, there are a few other Premier League clubs have also asked about Hofmann. It now remains to be seen if the German international is on the move come summer.
