Borussia Dortmund have emerged as a shock destination for Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso, with the Bundesliga giants eyeing a €15 million deal.
A recent report from Fichajes has shed some light on the future of Marcos Alonso. The left-back is facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel open to offloading him in the upcoming summer transfer window.
It has put Tuchel’s former employers Borussia Dortmund on red alert, as the Bundesliga giants hope to sign the left-back for as little as €15 million. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, though, is likely raise his demands, although a lot could depend on Alonso’s desire come the end of the season.
The Spaniard has had a largely disappointing campaign at Stamford Bridge, amassing only 13 Premier League appearances so far this season. Much of these games have come under Tuchel, as the defender was completely ostracised from the plans of former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.
Yet, Alonso is only considered as a rotation player for Tuchel, who has usually juggled between him and Ben Chilwell in the left wing-back position. And there is every indication that the German will be keen on signing his desired option in that position this summer, with Chelsea being notably linked with a move for Alex Sandro this summer.
It does not bode well for Alonso’s future at Chelsea, and that is where Borussia Dortmund come into the fray, as the Black and Yellows scour the market for a left-back that can provide cover for Raphael Guerreiro next season.
The Bundesliga giants have not been impressed by the performances of Nico Schulz, while they are set to lose out on the services of the long-serving Marcel Schmelzer at the end of the season.
It has led them towards Alonso, whose ability to also play as a centre-back should appeal to someone like Marco Rose in the Dortmund camp next season. The 30-year-old has a vast amount of experience at the highest level of football, while with his Chelsea contract due to expire in two years’ time, he should be a relatively cheaper option.
Alonso’s departure could be good move for Chelsea as well, as the Blues hope to undergo a defensive overhaul following an extremely successful little spell under Tuchel during the second half of the campaign.
It will be particularly interesting to see whether Alonso’s potential switch to Ruhrpott could improve relations between Chelsea and Dortmund, knowing the west London giants are one of the top contenders to sign Erling Haaland this summer.
At the end of the day, though, a lot could depend on the Spanish defender’s decision, and whether or not he does favour a move to Bundesliga, especially after observing the treatment Thomas Meunier received for his poor performances at Dortmund this season.
